Flip This Book Club- February Edition (The Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, by Jim Rohn))

Hello Guys and Gals.

I hope you enjoyed the weekend and the Super Bowl.  Hopefully you were all rooting for the Saints. icon smile Flip This Book Club February Edition (The Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, by Jim Rohn))

So…..how many of you guys read the Book of the Month?

I ended up ordering it from Amazon because they didn’t have it at the library, and both Borders and Barnes and Noble didn’t have it in stock either.  I didn’t order it until late in the month, and was worried I wasn’t going to be able to finish in time, but I ended up tearing through it in one sitting as soon as it arrived.  The book was only 121 pages, but was crammed full of awesome information.

I spoke to Shae about the book before I read it, and she told me she wore out her highlighter going through it.  I did the same thing.  When I got finished, almost every single page had something circled or highlighted.

For those who didn’t read the book, it is broken up into five sections, each one representing one of the five pieces to the life puzzle: Philosophy, Attitude, Activity, Results, and Lifestyle.

I’d say my favorite section in the book was chapter 3, which focused on the “Activity” piece of the puzzle.  Following is an excerpt from that chapter, where Jim is comparing those who are struggling in their businesses and lives to those who are super successful. He then goes on to answer the question- “Why are we not all doing better than they are?”

“The answer might well be that we do not work at achieving our goals, and they do. We do not take all that we are to the marketplace and put it to work.  They do.  We do not stay up late at night developing new plans to achieve our dreams and work hard day after day to make those dreams a reality.  They do. We do not learn all that we possibly can about our industry and our markets.  They do.  We do not make every effort to get around the right sources of influence, to associate with those people who can help us to achieve our goals.  They do.  While we are dreaming about the promise of the future, they are doing something about it, and they are doing it with a consistency and with an intensity and a level of commitment that would put many of us to shame….”

I typed that paragraph out , printed it, and tacked it on the bulletin board next to my desk to serve as a constant reminder of what I need to be doing if I want to achieve the level of success that I am looking for…

So, what about you guys?  What did you think of the book?  Anything in particular that really resonated with you?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments about it…

Oh, before I forget- next month’s choice for the Book of the Month will be Get Off Your “But” by Sean Stephenson.  I actually heard about this one from Julie Broad on one of her video guest posts for MustKnowInvesting.com.  Thanks Julie!

P.S.
I got my Fan Page badge working again- it’s over there in the right sidebar. If you haven’t become a fan of Flip This Wholesaler yet, I’d love for you to do so!

P.P.S
Have a great week Everybody!

    A phenomenal book!

Jim Rohn is a master. I love his definitions of success and failure …

“Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day. ”

“Failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.”

He breaks everything down so simply that every line in the book is a seminar.

I also love … “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.”

    May he rest in peace.

I learned about the Get Off Your Butt book from Julie’s video too. Looking forward to it.

I just finished an awesome book by Joe Vitale … Hypnotic Writing … you should check it out.

P.S. I’m a already your FB fan (you should go to my brand new FB fan page and fan me too)

I was big on the Activity chapter as well, but for me it was how he connected philosophy, attitude, activity, results and llifestyle to show you how you have to have all of those areas covered or you will fall short of your goals. I think the attitude part of us, is the weak link in the chain for most of us. A good attitude will breed action.

You are right Steph, there are so many great things in this book that I will be reading it again shortly.

Seriously, one of the best books I’ve ever read. Jim Rohn (R.I.P.) is a genius.

Here’s are a couple goodies not mentioned yet:

    PHILOSOPHY:
Motivation is not how people change their lives. To change a life, we must first change our thinking habits. If a person is a fool and becomes motivated, he merely becomes a motivated fool.

    ATTITUDE:
With the right attitude human beings can move mountains. With the wrong attitude they can be crushed by the smallest grain of sand.

Repetition is the mother of skill.

    ACTIVITY:
We must remember that discipline is a requirement for progress, and that affirmations without discipline is the beginning of delusion.

    RESULTS:
Having more doesn’t make us more. It merely magnifies what we already are.

When circumstances make progress difficult, this should be our signal to push harder, not to diminish our efforts. The difficulties we encounter serve a unique purpose. Difficulty tests the strength of our resolve.

    LIFESTYLE:
Happiness is not something you withdraw from your bank account. It is something to withdraw from life and from those around you.

This guy is brilliant. Common sense that just isn’t common. ;-)

Wow, Shae- look at you go… :)

I especially like the “motivated fool” quote. I chuckled out loud when I read it.

Thanks again for the recommendation- seems like it was a hit with everyone.

Just finished the ‘Activity’ Chapter. Great book. I’ll definitely have to re-read it again; it is a relatively small book, but it seems like each paragraph has something worth thinking about. I’ll definitely be getting some Rohn audios.

One thing that I found interesting was how Rohn favors affirmations that are grounded in reality. The example he gave was if you were broke, you should affirm that you are broke. This would spur you to take action because you have a better understanding of where you are. A little bit different from other self-improvement books/talks where it is advocated to affirm what you want to be in the future. Something about your subconscious not knowing the difference between current reality and your thoughts, so you will take actions that get you where you want to be. Either way, affirmations without action will not do much.

You know- I was going to bring that part up in my post, but I totally forgot until now.

I have to say I totally disagreed with him on that part. I started saying (positive) affirmations out loud and consistently several months back, and it has made a humongous positive impact in my life.

I can’t see how repeating affirmations like “I’m broke” would do anybody any good, even if it was true that they were broke… Seems like it would do more harm than good, ya know?

      • On February 09, 2010 at 9:01pm, Shae said...

I completely forgot about that part….but it struck me as odd as well. It’s ok to acknowledge where you are, but not sure why you’d affirm it over and over again.

Yeah, it didn’t make much sense to me.

I can see myself standing in front of the mirror saying, “I am the biggest procrastinator EVER. I am the biggest procrastinator EVER…..”

I don’t see how that would help any. ;)

I need to get my read on some more, so I just may join the party here.

Would love to have you join us in the Book Club.

If you can’t get in this time, make sure to come back for next month’s pick.

How was the ProBlogger book, btw?

      Hi Steph,
I think I will do just that. I will join the party next month. The accountability will keep me in check!

      I would give ProBlogger a solid B+ (B plus).

The most helpful part of the book I found is where Darren listed the different types of blog posts that you can write. This was great, as it gives you so many different ideas of potential articles that you can write.

Even better on blogging, not really a book though is Yaro Starak’s Blog Mastermind. I am taking that course now, and it is incredibly amazing. Yaro has put together such a comprehensive and detailed course. I recommend the course to anyone who want to up their game on blogging!

      Hi Diana,

You can join in any time you’d like. I’ll be picking a book at the beginning of every month, and then reviewing it the following month. The book for next month will be “Get off Your But” by Sean Stephenson. You can get it online at Amazon, or check your local library. Not sure if it comes in audio or digital format, but you can check and see.

We’ll meet back here next month on the same day to discuss it.

Hope you can make it! :)

Hi Steph, Sorry to change subject but I was wondering if you know if is there any type of contract where my buyer can put $7K as down payment ( This is the price of the house so I need it to pay it) and then finance the rest (7k) in a one lump sum payment in 3 months. I know I won’t make any money now but it’s not bad to get 7k in 3 months. Thank you. Gus G.

And you’re spot about keeping your goals in front of you and taking massive action. That’s the road to success, although it’s much easier said than done. :)

      Thanks for stopping by.

Stephani – I saw your link on Bigger Pockets. JR was a master philosopher. He had the gift of putting life principles into easily digestible form. I believe his legacy will grow as the years pass. And yes, this is an awesome book! What a great choice. It’s been awhile since I read it. It sits on my office bookshelf behind me…..I’m going to reread it. My all time fav book of Rohn’s is “Twelve Pillars”, which he co-authored with Chris Widener.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to read this book but he his next on my list. I have to admit that I love, love, love reading Shae’s thoughts after a book. It really is an eye opener and helps get ya informed about a book that you don’t know.

My dad recently sent me a Jim Rohn video and that’s the first I heard of him. I’ll definitely be picking up this book and more of Rohn’s stuff.

Steph, thanks again for starting this book of the month club and allowing us to keep our brains active and motivated day in and day out.

I have heard some of Jim Rohn’s audios but don’t have any of his books. I really liked him and his philosophy. I guess I need to pick up some of his books too.

Lots of self improvement gurus credit Jim for getting them started. I think he is probably less well known than he deserved to be. When he died I wrote a post with some of his quotes. I was surprised at the traffic it got.
